Jim Bates papers, 1981-1990.

Correspondence, memoranda, reports, public relations files, clippings. Contains files from several of the committees and subcommittees Bates served on as well as from some of his more well-known bills. Topics include the Subcommittee on Procurement and Printing, Navy procurement fraud, the Rural Electrification Administration's loan program, the San Diego Airport, and emergency care for trauma victims. The collection contains information on bills which Bates supported and gives quarterly histories of his actions and accomplishments since 1975.

Democrat Jim Bates has been involved in San Diego politics since 1971, serving as a member of the San Diego City Council until 1974. From 1975 to 1982 he served as chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. In 1982, he won California's 44th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, and has served on numerous House committees and subcommittees. Bates lost the House seat in November, 1990.
